1/2/2024 0 Comments Star ocean the last hope![]() You'll miss basically most of the character skits etc w/o a guide and some of them demand you backtrack a whole lot just for one stupid scene which you need to get the ending of that particular character. Literally nothing memorable or interesting or even somewhat new. it's just the same old cliched civilisations from any other JRPG ever. Running around and looking for search points or farming shit for crafting - which is tedious trial and error w/o a guide - or farming shit for the pointless mass of side quests there are which are ALL go and fetch x items and bring them back.Īnd the worlds are really boring that you explore. The gameplay (not combat) isn't any fun either. You're basically looking for another planet or something? It's really boring and it can't be that good if I can't recall the story (and I do generally remember worthwhile stories). Quite frankly, I don't even remember what the story was supposed to be. ![]() It's just like you fed some machine Anime data and told it to come up with characters. They're virtually some Otaku's idea of what a person is and that Otaku has not talked to another person his whole life I guess. Say you got a quest at a location on Disk 2, which sent you to a location on Disk 1, then Disk 3, then back to Disk 2 to collect the reward. Because it is a space game, you could always go back and visit most locations in the game, which meant swapping disks was commonplace. They decided to pack in hours of useless cutscenes to the story which likely forced the devs to location-lock the disks to save space. The disk swapping was a real bummer though. If they had made believable characters and a passable story, it would have been one the best JRGPs of the PS3/XBOX 360 era. The main characters, except Bacchus, were whinny anime troupes that should have never shipped. The combat and endgame blew my mind away for how fun they were back then. I would say overall, the game is a 7/10 for me. Story: F (aint nobody has time for a 30 minute space opera cutscene)Ĭharacters: D- (should be a F but Bacchus is amazing)Įndgame: A+ (for a single player RPG, it rivals some MMOs)ĭisk swapping: F (locations were specific to a disk) Lymle is the worst no matter how much tolerance to cringe you have) So yeah, just try and dive into it embracing the cheese and you'll be fine, kaaaayyyy? (P.S. It's the only one where you frequently travel to different planets instead of getting stuck on a single medieval planet for half the game, and in general it's a pretty coherent story with a BBEG that makes sense and doesn't come out of nowhere. Other than that, the combat is hands down the best in the series and I'd even go so far as to say I think I enjoyed the story the most out of any SO game (it's not the best, I just enjoyed it). If you can't see it in that light, you can just switch to the Japanese VA, which honestly it sounded like the English cast tried to mimic the JP voices exactly, so it's not that much better haha. I went into it knowing full well the VA sucks and embraced it as a super campy "so bad that it's good" dub and had a blast laughing/cringing my ass off at it. Personally, it's one of my favorites in the series.
